Monochromatic Animals

In this painting studio, Little Artists learned about mixing colors. Inspired by patchwork characters illustrated by Leo Lionni in, Elmer the Elephant, and David McKee’s Pezzettino.

In the first art session Little Artists designed their own patchwork animals by drawing on a two inch-gridded  piece of paper.

They then colored in the squares of the animal with a set of monochromatic pencils in their hue of choice.

The next step, was painting the canvas background.  Little artists explored making texture with their brush and when it was dry, transferred their original drawings onto their canvas using carbon paper.

In the second session, Little Artists extended their single base hue by mixing in tint shades (adding white or black) and painting the two-inch squares finishing their monochromatic color schemed animals.
