Handmade Journals

In this mixed media studio we learned the basic process of paper making and recycling waste into something beautiful and artistic. Little Artists created their own journals, by hand, from front to back.

The first step was to rip all of our old used paper into small bits and mix it with water in a blender until it was a thick pulp. We then poured this pulp into a large bin, mixing in more water and adding glitter.

Using a wire frame called a deckle, we sieved the water from the pulp, leaving a thin layer of the pulp on the deckle screen, which will become the new piece of paper.

We sponged out all the excess water with felt sheets and sponges before flipping our new piece of paper onto fabric to dry.

Once the paper was dry we decorated the paper with floss-stitched designs, sequins, beads and fancy printed-paper.

Our sewn papers were then glued onto our book covers, which we also made from recycled cardboard and paper.

Using wax bookbinding thread, we then bound papers together and glued them into our journal covers.IMG_2069 IMG_2064

Now all we need to do is fill the book with writings and drawings!

See You at the Next Studio!
