In this mixed media studio we practiced opening up our portrait drawing skills with gesture drawing. This fun and simple drawing exercise loosened our minds up and prevents us from thinking so much about perfection! See our drawings further below. We then drew our portraits again on canvas using placement techniques. This portrait looks very different compared to our previous fast gesture drawing.
This self-portrait was then used to create a wire bent abstract sculpture, similar to Alexander Calder’s wire portraits.
It was easy to plan ahead on how to bend the long wire since it is so similar to the one continuous flowing pencil line we just made in our gesture drawing. We used 20-guage wire which is easy to bend and twist. We place tape in parts that were completed so they were not to get in our way while finishing other areas.
Beautiful portraits take patience. When you take the time to look at the shapes, placement and the color of your features you'll be surprised at how your talent explodes!!
See you at the Next Studio!
