Graphic Novel

In this Drawing and Painting studio,  Little Artists met Alexis Cohen, a visual artist and storyteller based in San Francisco.  She came to help us  in creating a hero, who will be the main character in our 20 page color comic book!  Alexis shared her first printed graphic novel, Jaya the Nighttime Faerie.  We discussed illustrations, story life, color, layout and book dedications. Artists created the main protagonist and antagonist characters first, then develop the plot line. Creating a story that holds the reader’s attention and laying out their illustrated comic pages was fun and also a challenging process, taking more time than you would expect! But we got down to business!

Our books followed a simple problem, climax, resolution outline. Each page was drawn out and painted with watercolor pencils.

Deciding if we wanted full page spread, or quartered pages, speech bubbles or paragraph boxes was the next step for each page.

We laid out our final pieces to be photographed and scanned for is just a peak of a few that have when off to be printed at Blurb Books.

Jaya the Nighttime Faerie & the Music of Everything is an illustrated journey of a young faerie who learns how to harness her special gifts to overcome any challenge or fear. When Jaya comes out at night, she hears and dances to the musical rhythms of nature—sounds that no one else can hear.  When her playful explorations catch the attention of Mother Sky, she is given a gift - a guiding star - and is set upon a quest into the Land of the Unknown. On her journey she encounters things that are scary, but finds her inner wisdom and embraces her gifts to triumph over darkness. This story is a message of reassurance: even when we are most afraid—of the dark, death of a loved one or even our own power—we have an inner wisdom that can guide us.
